Week 1:- Introduction to BiW and Fixtures Challenge

BIW (Body in White) & Its Parts

BIW refers to the car body structure before painting and assembly of components.

  • Underbody: Floor pan, side members.

  • Upper Body: Roof, pillars (A, B, C, D).

  • Closures: Hood, doors, tailgate.

  • Front & Rear End: Fenders, bumper reinforcements.

BIW Nomenclature

Standard naming convention for BIW parts:

  • A-Pillar: Supports windshield.

  • B-Pillar: Between front and rear doors.

  • C-Pillar: Rear window support.

  • Dog House: Cavity for brackets/fasteners.

  • Datum Points: Reference for positioning.

  • Spot & MIG Welds: Types of joints.

Fixture & Its Types

A fixture holds and positions parts during operations.

  • Welding Fixtures: For BIW welding.

  • Checking Fixtures: Verify dimensions.

  • Assembly Fixtures: Hold parts during assembly.

  • Inspection Fixtures: Check fitment/tolerances.

  • Transport Fixtures: Move parts safely.

  • Geo Fixture: For precise positioning.

  • Re-Spot Fixture: Secondary welding operations.

Basic Principles of Fixture Design

  1. Accuracy: Precise positioning.

  2. Stability: Rigid and secure holding.

  3. Clamping: Firmly holds the part.

  4. Ease of Handling: Simple loading/unloading.

  5. Accessibility: Space for tools.

  6. Durability: Easy maintenance.

  7. Safety: Operator-friendly design.

Types of BIW Stations

  1. Geo Station: Main welding, ensures precision.

  2. Re-Spot Station: Secondary welding for strength.

  3. Framing Station: Joins underbody, sides, and roof.

  4. Sealing Station: Applies sealant to prevent leaks.

  5. Inspection Station: Quality and fitment checks.

  6. Material Handling Station: Moves parts between stations.

BIW Fixture Terminologies

  1. Locators: Position the part accurately.

  2. Clamp Units: Hold parts firmly.

  3. Rest Pads: Provide support.

  4. Locating Pins: Ensure alignment.

  5. Shims: Adjust alignment.

  6. Hard Stoppers: Prevent over-positioning.

  7. Gun Clearance: Space for welding tools.

  8. Mylar: Protective layer to avoid damage.

  9. Poka-Yoke: Error-proofing technique.

  10. Datum Points: Reference locations for accuracy

Summary:

BIW is the core structure of a vehicle, and fixtures play a vital role in holding and aligning parts during production. Proper nomenclature, station operations, and fixture principles ensure accuracy and quality in automobile manufacturing.
