Week 1:- Introduction to BiW and Fixtures Challenge
1.What is BIW & define its parts?
The BIW is short form for body in white. BIW basically means a stage in which a car body's frame in automobile manufacturer in which a car body's frame is joined together with other part.
The define of the part for BIW such as roof, body side, underbody, backdoor. The image shown below is about

2.What do you understand by BIW nomenclature?
What I understand about BIW nomenclature it is standard naming system for each body part. BIW also have no. of parts in it and all parts have different names. The image below shows an example of BIW nomenclature

3.What is fixture & its types?
A fixture is a device which holds and locates a workpiece during an inspection or for a manufacturing operation such as welding the pieces. Following are the different types of fixtures BIW:
|
1 |
Production fixtures |
for production |
|
2 |
Pre-production operation fixtures (PP0) |
Design for prototype fixture. To test the production to see if any error or can be upgradeable. |
|
3 |
Checking fixtures |
for checking the part meet the requirement standard or not |
Below show the link example for checking fixtures:

4.What is the basic principle of fixture design?
3-2-1 principle is a location that used to limit the movement of object along the 3 axis and it is called 6 translational DOF that is +x,-x, +y,-y,+z- z . And for each of the axis has it own degree of freedom (DOF).Rotational degrees such as below:
|
1 |
+X anticlockwise |
7 |
-x anticlockwise |
|
2 |
+X clockwise |
8 |
-x clockwise |
|
3 |
+y anticlockwise |
9 |
-y anticlockwise |
|
4 |
+y clockwise |
10 |
-y clockwise |
|
5 |
+z anticlockwise |
11 |
-z anticlockwise |
|
6 |
+z clockwise |
12 |
-z clockwise |
Base on the table above axis has 12 degrees of freedom and their all need be fixed.
The image show an example of 3-2-1 principle clamping an object for welding

5.Elaborate types of BIW Stations?
The assembly line is consists many part of stations and each stations perform differently to do a curtain task because its impossible to assemble all the car body at one stations. There are 4 type of stations that is tools station, grippers stations, stand station and miscellaneous stations. Image below show more the detail of each stations.

6.What are the basic terminologies used in the BIW fixture?
Below are the basic terminologies used in the BIW fixture:
- Sensor
- Reed switches
- Skin Surface
- Pivot
- Clamp Arm
- Name Plate
- Co-ordinate Plate
- Number Plate
- Units
- coordinate measuring machine (CMM)
- Hardware
- Rough Locators
- Shims
- Risers
- Blade
- Product Longevity Program (PLP)
Below show the image of others terminology and its definition
