Week 1:- Introduction to BiW and Fixtures Challenge
1) Body in white refers to the welded sheet metal component which forms the vehicle structure to which the other component will be married.
Different parts of the BIW are-
Rail roof side
Arch B Roof
Pillar
Fender
Wheel housing
Front panel side
insert panel side
2) In simple terms BIW is the name given to a car body sheet when all its components- barring moving parts eg- hood, fender, trims or chassis subassemblies have been welded together.
3) A fixture is a device that holds the workpiece to be processed, by using 3-2-1 principle. In general, a welding fixture consists of a number of units to hold a car panel and is mounted on a baseline.
Welding fixtures are normally designed to hold and support various components to be welded. It is necessary to support them in a proper location that is capable of preventing distortion in the workpiece during welding.
Types of fixtures are-
1) Production fixtures
2) Pre-production fixtures
3) Checking fixtures
4) BIW STATION
a) Geo tool- A geo tool is a fixture in which the geometry of the panel which is welded together is defined accurately. The pin tolerance for a geo pin will be closer tolerance i.e - in general.
b) Re-spot tool-
A re-spot tool is a fixture in which the remaining weld spots which are not achieved in geo tool are welded for the pre-welded panel from the geo tool.
c) Marriage or hemming tool-
A marriage or hemming tool is a fixture in which the inner panel assembly or outer panel are joined together.
D) Checking station-
A checking station tool is a fixture which is used to check the automotive parts or assemblies, ensuring all the coordinate related dimension and positions as per the tolerance. A checking station can be a gauge type, automated checking fixture.
5) Basic terms used in BIW are-
NC/MYLARS
PLP
BLADE
RISERS
SHIMS
ROUGH LOCATORS
HARDWARES
CMM
UNITS
NUMBERPLATES
COORDINATE PLATE
NAMEPLATE
PIVOT
SENSORS
