Q.1 What is BIW & define its parts?
BIW are the automotive Sheetmetal components that are being welded together to form the main vehicle structure. this structure will be used to assemble other vehicle components like powertrain, seats, trim, windshield, rear glass, etc.
Components of BIW are:
- Body sides ---> (Outer Side - Inner Side)
- Under Body ---> (Front End - Main Floor - Rear End)
- Closures ---> (FRT, RR Doors - Hood - Deck Lid)
- Roof ---> (Inner Panel - Outer Panel)
- Fenders
Q.2 What do you understand by BIW nomenclature?
The BIW contains majority of the vehicle main structure components, it is used to assemble rest of trim and other parts on the vehicle. it is important to define common terminology for vehicle components to support common understanding between engineers.
Q.3 What is fixture & its types?
Fixture is a rigid device that is being used to hold multiple parts together for doing a specific action like gluing or welding for example. it is responsible for locating, supporting and holding these workpieces together and this all can be done using 3-2-1 principle.
Types of Fixtures:
- Production Fixtures: Used for mass production to ensure proper location of panels during welding processes and avoid distortion due to welding stresses and to achieve the best shape and dimensional performance.
- Pre-Production Fixture: For initial patch production and prototyping.
- Checking Fixture: Check and inspect the key product dimensional and geometrical characteristics.
Q.4 What is the basic principle of fixture design?
The basic principle is fixing the part and locking all the twelve degrees of freedom (6 movements and 6 rotations). The simplest way for doing this is using the 3-2-1 principle.
