Week 1 Challenge
INTRODUCTION
A mechanical engineer has a basic knowledge in very field like fluid dynamic, heat transfer, dynamics of machine, theory of machine, design of machine etc. To bring this knowledge in day to day life practical for various applications, a knowledge of 3d designing and simulation is required to check whether the object is suitable in various factor like surrounding temperature, local stresses, crushing stress, safety factor etc.
In his challenge, the topic is related to fluid dynamics where a butterfly valve is made from scratch in design modeller. A butterfly valve is made which is used to regulate and control, throttle the flow. They are featured by a fast operation and low-pressure drop. To make an open position from the closed, it requires only quarter turn. Wafer, lug, Single-Flange, Flange are the regular types of butterfly valves.
OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this challenge is to built a butterfly model in ANSYS design modeller from scratch. This model consists of base, main body, head cover, handle and a shaft.
PROCEDURE
A detailed procedure to built this model is as follows:
- To design this model bottom up approach is used where the model is made from bottom i.e. base to up i.e. cover.
- Here is the tree from the model being made
- .
- Keeping in mind bottom up approach, in XY plane the sketch of base was drawn.
- As the sketch was complete it was extruded in normal direction to XY plane.
- Now making a new plane at the top face of base. New plane (ie. Plane 6) was made to make flanges of valve body.
- On sketching in new plane, the flanges from the dimensions provided, those are extruded normal to plane with 32 mm.
- Since the body of valve starts from the top surface of base, from the same plane(6) the sketch of the body is drawn and extruded.
- Now again making a new plane (ie plane 7) which is the length of the body ie 224mm, the upper flanges are drawn and extruded in reversed direction of length 32 mm.
- After the body is completed , the handle portion is made by introducing new plane at midway of body. Now because the plane to be created is on a circular body and not on the flat surface , the tangent plane option is to be enabled in plane creation. New plane is plane 8.
- Form that plane an outer circular body is extruded by a simple circle sketch on plane 8.
- And from that handle support the handle is drawn by creating plane which is at the face of handle support. Ie 45 mm away from plane 8.(plane 16).
- Plane 11 and plane 15 from the tree are just for dimension purpose.
- Hence from plane 16 and 18 the handle is drawn.
- Now again from plane 7 select a new sketch option from below the menu bar and head is drawn.
- It is extruded by 30 mm from top of the body surface.
- Now the only remaining component is shaft.
- From plane 19, the shaft is made where it starts from plane 19 and continues till 26.(ie plane 19,23,24,25,26).
- Shaft is simply created by starting plane ,making a circle of given dimension and then extruding it. again the next plane is made from the end face of extruded part and making circle ad extruding and this continues till end. Here extrude 20,24,25,26 and 27 are used to complete the shaft.
- Now from the planes created , nut and bolts are made.
- From the top surface of body, bolt head and bolt body is extruded in opposite directions.
- Again from the upper flange lower surface, a plane is created and nut is made with same dimensions of that of bolt body. Yellow portion represents nut and bolts.
- Fillet is made at the top and bottom edges of head and base.
CONCLUSION
Thus with the following steps the model is completed from the scratch. Here are the some pictures of complete model. It was a great task from which learning new things were very intresting and till the end of the modelling the same interest is carried out.
