Underbody Coating
UNDERBODY COATING:
About Underbody Coating:
It is a method which is done under the chassis with certain amount of thickness(coating thickness and defined area) followed in various organizations by following their respective standards. The coating is applied while manufacturing or by the local dealerships, moreover this coating acts as the protective layer for the undercarriage.
Purpose:
The coating is done under the body of the automobile to prevent from rust, corrosion, stones hitting the underbody, salt deposition, Weather conditions etc., which may occurs during mobility.
Types of Underbody Coating:
1.Rubberized Underbodycoating
2.Polyurethane Underbodycoating
3.Wax based Underbodycoating
4.Asphalt based Underbodycoating
Process of Underbody Coating:
Step 1: Pretreatment process
It removes and cleans the excess metals present under the chassis and forms an appropriate structure enables for bonding of a corrosion protective layer.
Step 2: Electrodeposition
E-coating is a method of dipping the car bodies in the coating solution and passing the electric current and the liquid ED paint solution. The tank consits of 80% of deionised solution and rest is full of paint solids and then kept at a temperature of 160 deg celcius for 10 mins to mprove the performance properties.
Step 3:Rust Proof material
After Electrodeposition, the sealent like PVC material is coated for the prevention of chipping. A high elastic resin is used that resides between the ED stage and primer, and a dull black pigment is applied areas of the body called as blackout coating.
Step 4:Primer
The fourth step involves in filling and smoothening minor imperfections and scratches. The primer is a water borne, Solvent borne or powder borne. It involves in Exterior, Interior, and Cutting in an oven of the automobile. The impotant thing is that the primer color should match with the basecoat.
Step 5: Top coat
The final coating involves the Top coat which is the third layer and it prevents from etch and environmental scratches. It resists from the UV rays of the sun, the maintainence is made easier. The birds droppings, Tree resin and other chemicals are easily removed from the automobile.
Pros
1)Minimizes the noise
2)Heat insulation property
3)Anti chirping
4)Increased lifespan
5)Rust and corrosion Prevention.
Cons
1)Cost Expensive
2)Depending uopn the weather conditions the properties might not behave properly.
3) The process is long.
