Underbody Coating

What is under body coating?

Underbody coating is an additional lamellar layer coated on the underside of the vehicle body. It is applied when vehicle is neatly washed and cleaned. It would be better if coating is applied during the car delivery of new car from the showroom. Or it can be applied at any timeline of car life. Once applied it will minimise the corrosion & other damage to the car. But for best result of UBC(Under body coating) it’s recommended at the delivery of the new car from the show room.

Prime purpose of UBC is to prevent under belly of vehicle against corrosion, rust & dust. There are some other advantages of UBC are.

  • It prevents vital under belly parts of vehicle from water, road debris, gravel and small pebbles from making dent.
  • It provides damping effect to vehicle there by reduces NVH level.
  • It has insulating property, thus prevents the heat of from under body components from reaching cabin there by it provides comfortable cabin experience.
  • It provides prolonged car life and good resale value.

Types of UBC

  • Rubberized Underbody Coating.
  • Wax Based or paraffin based Underbody Coating.
  • Asphalt Based Automotive Undercoating.
  • Polyurethane Underbody Coating.
  1. Rubberized Underbody Coating

It is a type of UBC which forms rubbery layer post application. Hence it is called so.it is most preferred amongst all other UBC since it has multiple advantage & long life. And it is easy to apply. It protects vehicle under belly form moisture, corrosion, dust & dents. It also give thermal insulation and acts as noise reducer. Thus providing all round protection. Its application is not restricted only to under carriage, but it also can be applied to wheel wells and quarter panels.

2. Wax Based or paraffin based Underbody Coating

This UBC is cheapest & quickest amongst all. At the same time it can offer protection only for less time period since its gets stripped off quickly & need reapplication very often. It is available in the form of aerosol which is applied through spar gun. Wax based UBC never gets cured to get hardened instead it flows cracks, joints and flaws to offer protection from humidity. Its is to considered that it can offer on basic level of protection.

3. Asphalt Based Automotive Undercoating

This UBC offers better protection than compared rubber based UBC. But this UBC is preferred for large vehicles like truck, buses & vans. It also contains some amount of rubber in it so it offers sound and heat insulation.other side of this UBC is its application is bit time consuming since it takes more curing time than any other UBC. And after applying this UBC paint cant be painted over this makes it scope confined only to under body of vehicle where there is asthenic factor to be considered.

4. Polyurethane Underbody Coating

This is another good UBC available which offers better degree of protection. This often quick and easy for application. This UBC comes with canisters ready to preload into an application gun. This UBC flows and seeps in to cracks, flaws & gaps by displacing dusts, and rust salts by flowing around rust area. And binds to to the surface of oxidized metal.

On he flipside, this type of car undercoating generally requires a little bit more surface prep work before applying sanding and applying an etching primer to bare metals before using are generally recommended.
