Underbody Coating

Underbody coating is usually a dense layer of Paint (often based on rubber) applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile.Cars underbody is most prone to corrosion. Underbody coating provides long term protection from corrosion to car’s underbody. It also protects parts like internal body panels, frame rails and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion.

Types of Underbody Coating:

1. Rubberized Undercoating:This is generally thought of as the best underbody coating for the car. It preserves the underbody well, protecting it from scratches. Applying this to the undercarriage is not much of a hassle either.

2. Polyurethane Undercoating:This coating closes up splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. It offers up good protection against corrosion and also bonds with the metal. This type of car undercoating generally requires a little bit more surface prep work before applying sanding and applying an etching primer to bare metals before using are generally recommended.

3. Wax or Paraffin-Based Undercoatings: wax-based undercoating puts up a big fight against moisture. It is also the most affordable option out there. This – more or less – ephemeral undercoating will wear away in a few months’ time and reapplied at least once every year.

4. Asphalt-Based Undercoating: Best suited for lorries, trucks and large vehicles this provides a greater degree of protection compared to rubber-based coatings. However, asphalt-based coatings contain little amounts of rubber for sound-insulation purposes. The process of applying this coating is a bit time-consuming though.

Pros:

1.Protection against corrosion: The main reason for getting an underbody coating is to prevent rusting and corrosion due to different climatic Condition.Underbody coating can also reduce wear and tear of the vehicle.

2.Anti-chipping property: If any stone hits the coating it does not get chipped away hence protects the underbody from exposure to water.

3.Heat Insulation: It insulates the interior of the car from extreme temperatures from beneath the vehicle providing a comfortable cabin experience.

4. Reduces NVH levels: The underbody coating prevents and absorbs all noise created by the contact of the surface of the road and the car by minimising this.

Cons:

1. It is less helpful if corrosion is already present- For an undercoating to be the most effective, it should be in place before the underbelly of your car begins to rust. If you apply it over corrosion, you will still isolate the metal from further moisture and airflow, which is good, but the existing oxidizing/rusting process will still continue to occur.

2.It adds weight to the vehicle-Although the amount of weight added to a vehicle with an undercoating is minimal (between 10 to 20 pounds for most vehicles), there is a small element of fuel economy to consider.

3. It must be reapplied every 3 to 5 years for the best results- In salty or destructive environments, however, you may need to have a new undercoating applied every 3 years for the best results.

4.High cost- Some of the underbody coating are still expensive and need to apply them frequently adds to the total maintenance cost.
