Underbody Coating

UNDER-BODY COATING

Underbody coating refers to the protective coating done on the bottom side of a vehicle to protect it from the natural elements which may result in rusting of the metal compartments. The BiW structure of a car is well coated with a layer of protective layer by the process called Electric Deposition in which the BiW structure of the vehicle is dipped in to a bath of the coating liquid. As the liquid bath is negatively charged and the car body is positively charged a uniform and a layer of protective liquid is deposited on the structure. The also acts as an initial primer like structure for the paint which will be coated on in the further stages.

For an added protection for the underbody of the vehicle sealants are used. It helps in blocking the water entry inside the cabin and also blocks much of the road noise sweeping in to the cabin while driving. the sealants and the coating also protected the spot-welded portions of the structure.

Aftermarket underbody coatings are also available which customer gets done for an extra layer of protection. The popular varieties are as follows

  • Rubberized Underbody coating
  • Wax Based Underbody coating
  • Asphalt Based Underbody coating
  • Polyurethane Underbody coating

When discussing about the downside of the under body coating we may find the aftermarket coatings are expensive and may damage the components which are exposed during the time of application.
