Underbody Coating

As the underbody is exposed to the road it experiences wear and tear and requires protection from rust and corrosion. This protective coating is known as the underbody coating

Types of underbody coating:

  1. Rubberized Underbody Coating - Generally considered to be the best type of underbody coating. Its application is easy and it provides good protection.
  2. Wax Based Underbody coating – This provides temporary protection and will wear away in a few months. However, it is a more affordable option and it provides protection against moisture.
  3. Asphalt Based Automotive Undercoating – Best suited for larger vehicles as it provides better protection than compared to rubber-based coating. However, the application process is time consuming and costs more.
  4. Polyurethane Underbody Coating – This coating is used to close up fractures and splits on the vehicle underbody. It offers good protection and can be painted over.

Advantages –

  • Prevents rust and corrosion
  • Since the undercoating is often make of rubber is can absorb/soften the noise that reaches the cabin.
  • It can prolong a vehicles life as it provides protection against wear and tear.

Disadvantages –

  • Undercoating can be effective only if the underbody is rust free, hence it is best suited for new vehicles.
  • It adds additional cost to the vehicle.
