Underbody Coating
Underbody coating is usually a dense cladding applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile. It is normally sprayed or painted when the car is just out of dealership and is clean. The main purpose of undercoating is to check rust especially in the body componenets like frame rails along with other exposed metal parts. Underbody coating can also reduce wear an tear. In Indian road conditions, a car's underbody is most prone to corrosion. So, it very essential to get the underbody coated. However, it is to be noted that undercoating and rust protection are actually two different things. Rust protection generally goes inside the vehicle, while undercoating is used for protection outside the vehicle.
Underbody coating serves many important purposes. One of the main important purposes of it is its ability to prevent the paint from chipping. When a car travels at high speed on a highway, the small stones and debris hit the car's underbody in this process and may lead to chipping of the underbody paint. Hence it is advisable to have a thick layer of underbody coating to prevent from chipping. Another important aspect of the underbody coting is that it reduces NVH levels. Being in a country where not all roads are smooth enough and are filled with potholes, stones, debris and uneven road levelling, the under body coating prevents and absorbs all noise created by the contact of the surface of the road and the car by minimising this. To summarise it can be understood that the purpose of undercoating is to lengthen the car's life. Good underbody coating not only defends the underbody from corrosion but also protects the engine and transmission as well. Less rusting coupled with slower wear and tear can surely add to the lifespan of the vehicle. One of the most important factors to be taken into account before undergoing the undercoat is however to properly clean the surface.

Underbody coating may be of different types. Some of the various kinds of automotive underbody coating are discussed below.
1. RUBBERIZED UNDERBODY COATING
This is the most sought after underbody coating for a car. It is a process which is very simple. It also preserves the underbody well protecting it from scratches. The process to apply this to the undercarriage is not much of a complex process either.
2. WAX BASED UNDERBODY COATING
One of the taking points of this underbody coating is its ability to put up a big fight against moisture. From the economical point of view, this process of undercoating is the most affordable option out there. However this undercoating will wear away in a few months.
3. ASPHALT BASED AUTOMOTIVE UNDERCOATING
This is best suited for trucks and large vehicles and it provides a greater degree of protection as compared to the rubberbased coatings. HOwever its drawback is that the asphalt-based coatings contain little amount of rubber for sound insulation purposes. And the process is a little time consuming.
4. POLYURETHANE UNDERBODY COATING
One of the advantageous features of this underbody coating is that it closes the splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. Its ability to protect against corrosion is quite impressive and also bonds well with the metal. Unlike in the case of asphalt-based coating, one can paint over the polyurethane coating.
There are a lot of factors why investing in a underbody coating should be considered. First of all, it fights against rust. It plays an important role in keeping corrosion at bay. Underbody coating is a must for all who lives in an area where there is too much humidity, and rusting is just one of those everyday things. It is also essential for those who reside in a place where it snows in winter.Underbody coating also absorbs noise. The most underappreciated aspects of the underbody coating is its ability to absorb noise. Since the undercoating is often made up of rubber, it absorbs some of the rackets. The occupants of the car could spare themselves of the road noise. Thizs often prolons a car's life. Good undercoating not only prevents the underbody from corrosion but also protects the engine and transmission as well.
The only drawback of under coating one could imagine of is the fact that it does cure the already existing rust and corrosion.Undercoating will not help if corrosion already exists and needs to be removed first before it can be applied, which can sometimes be expensive.
