Underbody Coating
Coating in general means adding additional layer over material chemically or physically to protect the surface of material from any surface damage that could happen from external environment.
A car is exposed to various environments and runs through muddy road, potholed roads, stones &other obstacles on runway. Specifically car’s bottom part exposed to all these conditions which will lead to corrosion and rust and in long term resulting in complete failure.
Underbody coating :
Underbody coating is a protection layer formed under bottom part of car for protection against any kind of corrosion and wear phenomenon and to increase the service life.
In addition to the damage protection, it also acts as a sound and heat insulator. It minimizes sound from underneath of car and also protects passenger cabin from heat penetration from external extreme temperatures

Types of undercoating
- Rubberized coats
- Wax or paraffin coats
- Polyurethane coats
- Asphalt-based coats
1.Rubberized undercoating
This coating is easy apply technique and it offers good sound resistance. This can be easily painted over surface and easily removable with special removal spray
2.Wax or paraffin undercoating
This coating method is cheapest option and gives basic protection in average humid atmosphere but disadvantage of this method is, it has to be ripped off once in a year or at regular interval to replace it with new coating otherwise slight damage to undercarriage be proceed to grow
4.Polyurethane Undercoating
This coating is polyurethane-based sealant which gas good fluidity to fill over small areas and replace dust &moisture to react with unoxidized metal parts. But disadvantage of this method is, surface preparation has to be carried out before undercoating which increases labor &cost.
4.Asphalt based undercoating
This is strongest undercoating available used on bigger vehicles traveling across tough road conditions such as trucks, military vehicles. This coating needs more cure time compared to all other methods
Advantage of Undercoating
- Protection against rust formation
- Increased service life of vehicle
- Acts as thermal insulator for underbody of car
- Acts of sound arrestor
Disadvantage of Undercoating
1.Toxic to human
Highly rich chemical products blended with air while applying will be inhaled by personnel in small percentage even if protective masks are available. Prolonged contact leads to human internal organ damage
2.Unpleasant smell in high temperatures
Some wax based undercoating gives a unpleasant aroma especially in summer time when atmosphere temperature is high
