What is Underbody coating?

Underbody coating is usually a dense cladding applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile. It is normally sprayed or painted on when the vehicle is just out of the dealership & is clean.

Need of under body coating?

In indian road conditions, a cars under body is prone to corrosion.underbody coating provides long term protection from corrosion to car's under body. it also protects parts like internal body panels, frame rails & other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion.

Types of underbody coatings?

most commonly these coatings are wax based,bitumen based & resin based.

1) Wax based -: The wax is applied soft & cures hard, either by brush or spray and can be layered thickly. this coating never hardens during application,they drip or flow into seams and cracks to provide protective properties.

they are the cheapest and quickest option available with which to protect the under carriage of car.

2) Bitumen based -: these car underboddy coatings provide hard wearing protection against stone chip damage and corrosion. They also have sound deadning properties.these are cannot be painted over. Can be applied by spray or brush. high build & good for very tough conditions such as off-road.

3) Resin based -: Rubberized and polyurethane false under the Resin based coating, they provide long-term stone chip damage and corrosion protection as well as sound deadning effects.they can be painted over. can be spray applied,highbuild, & particularly good for salted roads.

Benefits & Drawbacks of Underbody coating?

Benefits:

1. Prevents stone chip damage- a thick layer of coating provides protection from stones,gravel,salt & other debris thrown by the road.
2. protects from corrosion- the automotive coating process consists of 5 layers of protective & decorative paints. which helps to avoid corrosion.
3. prevents water ingress- By covering cracks in paint work or joints in undercarriage of a vehicle, avoids water or moisture to corrode.
4. minimizes sound- the paint used for coating has good damping properties which avoids vibrations from th roads and noice of debris thrown at car.
5. is easy to maintain

Drawbacks:

1. high cost
2. risk of damage during application
