Turbo Charger Simulation Project
The first case was run with 2mm base grid mesh for 0.006 secs and the results obtained are as under:
This case was run keeping the pressure ratio as 2.5
1. Angular velocity of turbine obtained as seen from the plot is around 41 rad/sec i.e. 400 RPM and it could be seen that it has not yet converged i.e. the impellar is in its accelerating phase.
2. Moment of inertia plot:
3. Mass flow rate across the inlet and outlet: It could be seen that the plot converges and the value for mass flow rate obtained corresponding to the pressure drop of 2.5 is 0.05 kg/sec
The second case was run with 2mm base grid mesh for 0.006 secs and results obtained are as under:
This case was run for the pressure ratio of 3
1. Angular velocity of turbine obtained as seen from the plot is around 60 rad/sec i.e. 572 RPM and it could be seen that it has not yet converged i.e. the impellar is in its accelerating phase.
2. Moment of inertia plot:
3. Mass flow rate across the inlet and outlet: It could be seen that the plot converges and the value for mass flow rate obtained corresponding to the pressure drop of 3 is 0.06 kg/sec. Thus we can conclude that with increase in pressure ratio across the inlet and outlet boundary more mass flow is induced inside the turbine.
Now in order to obtain higher RPM of the impellar the simulation end time was increased as:
We obtained 400 RPM with end time of 0.006 sec
thus, in order to obtain impelar RPM of around 8000 RPM end time should be `0.006*8000/400` we obtain the simulation end time as 0.12sec.
Therefore, the next case was run with end time as 0.1sec for more finer mesh of 1mm base grid size and results obtained are:
This case was ran with pressure ratio of 2.5
1. Angular velocity of the Turbine plot: It could be seen that higher RPMs are obtained for the impellar with increasing simulation end time.
2. The moment of inertia plot: Though the plot coud be seen quite fluctuating but the mean of the fluctuation is around 0.6 N-m as is the case of all the above cases
Youtube link for velocity distribution for first case ran with 2.5 pressure ratio for 0.006 secs
It could be seen that for lesser end time the impellar shows hardly any rotation
Youtube link for Pressure distribution for the case ran for 0.1secs with pressure ratio of 2.5
It could be seen that with increasing simulation end time the impellar shows significant rotation.
