Aim:

Obtain a 3D tetra mesh from the intake manifold model with the following the given criteria.

Target/ Averrage length 3
Minimum Length 1
Maximum Length 5
Tet Collapse 0.2

Objective:

  • Clear the geometry errors of the parent model.
  • Create a 2D tria mesh from the surfaces of the intake manifold model.
  • Generate 3D mesh from the existing 2D mesh for volume using a suitable non-structured mesh algorithm.
  • Check for feature capturing and update elements if failing for quality criteria.

Procedure:

  • The intake manifold component is loaded into the ANSA workspace.
  • The model is refined to observe the features. The model is found to be a single volume component and connection between the surfaces is missing.
  • The missing connection is taken care by doing the topo operation and the surfaces are oriented to be grey on outside.
  • Surfaces of the model are checked for its compatibility to be meshed with the given criteria. The surfaces are edited accordingly and model is made ready to be meshed.
  • The model perimeters are adjusted according to the target element length.
  • The quality criteria and mesh parameters are inserted into the software.
  • The critical features like holes, fillets are meshed initially and ortho-trias are used to capture the features. Suitable number of elements is selected at the edges.
  • The curved surfaces are meshed with ortho-trias.
  • The remaining surfaces are meshed with regular trias and if needed, the mesh is reconstructed to improve the mesh flow and quality.
  • If elements are found to be failing for the quality, they are edited either by reconstructing the elements at that regions or by moving nodes over the perimeter.
  • The volume is defined manually and solid property is assigned. The non-structured mesh is generated by tetra rapid algorithm and some elements among the tetra elements produced are found to be failing for tet collapse criteria.
  • Using tetra FEM algorithm, only one element is found to failing for the tet collapse. So elements generated from Tetra FEM algorithm are kept and the other solid elements are removed.
  • The failing solid element is isolated in the view and is manipulated by moving the suitable node of the element and element is manipulated to pass the quality criteria.
  • Node is manipulated to move and care is taken such that no kinks and dips are generated.
  • The solid elements are released from the mesh and the model is saved.

Result:

The 3D tetra mesh following the given criteria is obtained while capturing the features. The mesh is generated without any kinks and dips.

Learning outcomes:

Use of different non-structure algorithm is understood. Manipulating the solid elements according to the requirement is learnt.

Time taken: 4 ½ hours.
