To calculate dead and live load for industrial steel structures and to apply them using TSD

QUESTION: 1

Calculate dead load in design report based on IS code and apply dead load on the model

  • Finishes of 50mm
  • Slab as per design
  • Brickwall 150mm thickness
  • Roofing load based on purlin size
  • Ceiling loading 0f 0.3KN per sq m

ANS:

AIM: To Calculate dead load in design report based on IS code and apply dead load on the model

Given Data,

Dead load=1.2 KN/m^2

Finishes = 0.05* 24 -1.2 KN/m^2

Brick-wall load

  1. Ground to intermediate = 0.15*20*5.2 =15.6 KN/m^2
  2. Intermediate to roof = 0.15*20*6.8 =20.4 KN/m^2
  3. Roof to top most floor= 0.15*20*4.8 =14.4 KN/m^2

Ceiling load= 0.3 KN/m^2

Roof load = 1.5 KN/m^2

PROCEDURE:

STEP: 1

  • Open TEKLA Structural Designer software

  • Now click on open file and open the week 3 assignment file

STEP: 2

  • Now go to model tab and select slabs on beam option as shown
  • add slabs to each floor as shown below

STEP: 3

  • now we need to add different loads in load cases tab
  • go to load tab and select load cases
  • we will get a new window named as loading

  • so add required loads in this window

STEP: 4

  • Now go to load tab and select combinations
  • we will get a new window named as loading
  • click on combinations and add required combinations as shown

  • now select on levels where we need to apply loads
  • select the loads as required at the bottom left corner

STEP: 5

  • Now go to load tab and select the area to apply load on slab
  • Here we can see the area load applied on the slab

  • Now go to Load tab select UDL applied on the brick wall
  • Finally apply loads on the roof

RESULT:

Hence, we completed Calculation of dead load design report based on IS code and application of dead load.

QUESTION: 2

Calculate live load in design report based on IS code and apply live load on the model

  • Assume the loading based on IS 875
  • Roof loading
  • Consider equipment loading as 5KN per sq m

ANS:

AIM: To Calculate live load in design report based on IS code and apply live load on the model

From IS 875, we take the live loads as for as,

  • Workshop- 5KN/m^2
  • Staircase- 5KN/m^2
  • Administration room- 5KN/m^2
  • Store room- 5KN/m^2
  • meeting room- 5KN/m^2
  • conference room- 5KN/m^2
  • corridor- 5KN/m^2
  • Toilet- 2KN/m^2
  • Rest Room - 2KN/m^2
  • Canteen- 3KN/m^2
  • Office room = 3KN/m^2
  • Equipment room = 10 KN/m^2

PROCEDURE:

The Live loads are applied for all the floors, as shown below.

  • Now select the level where we want to apply the loads.
  • Now select the loads as required at the bottom left corner

  • Now go to the load tab and select the Area to apply load on the slab
  • Now we can see the Area load applied on the slab

RESULT:

Hence, we have Calculated the live load in design report based on IS code and application of live load on the model is done.

QUESTION: 3

Generate a calculation for 5T crane loading based on following inputs

  • Centre to Centre of wheel = 10m
  • Weight of crab = 40 KN
  • Number of wheels = 4
  • Wheel base = 2m

ANS:

AIM: To Generate a calculation for 5T crane loading based on following inputs

Given Data:

Centre to Centre span of the wheel = 10m.

Weight of the crab = 40 KN

Number of wheels = 4

Wheel base = 2m

Crane capacity-50 KN

Weight of trolley = 10KN

Minimum hook approach = 1m

PROCEDURE:

Maximum point load on crane = crane capacity + weight of trolley = 50+10KN =60KN

UDL= Self weight of crane / distance between rails

= 40/14

= 2.89 KN/m

Moment at A

'Sigma' MA = 0

60*1-Rb 14-2.89*14/2=0

Rb= 24.5 KN

'Sigma' Fy = 0

RA-RB-60-2.89*14=0

RA = 75.9 KN

Now, let’s assume the total self-weight of the grinder =1.5 KN/m

Factored load=1.5 *1.5 = 2.25 KN/m

Load on each wheel = 75.9/2 =37.97 KN

Factored load=37.97 *1.5 = 57 KN

Moment at C:

Sigma' MC=0

RD*6 = 2.25*6*3-57*4.5+57*2.5

RD = 73.25 KN

Sigma Fy = 0

RC=RD=57=57=2.25*6

RC=54.25 KN

Max Shear Force:

'Sigma' Mf-0

RE x 6-57 x 6-57 x 4-2.25 x 6 x 3=0

RE = 101.75 KN

V=WI/2 1.5*6/2=4.5 KN

Impact load = 10% of wheel load = 10 % x 101.75 = 10.175 KN

Maximum shear force =10.175+ 101.75 +4.5 =116.425 KN

Lateral load analysis = 5% of total weight = (5/100) x 60 =3 KN
