Static Structural Analysis of Buckle Clip using Ansys
Objective - Mesh the buckle clip model in such a way that the overall number of elements is less than 31,000. It is mandatory to bring it under 31K.
Simulate the component for both kinds of motion
Case 1 - Moving the clip by keeping the buckle fixed.
Case 2 - Moving the buckle by keeping the clip fixed.
If one of the motions is not converging, explain why that particular motion when simulated did not converge.
Procedure -
Create Static structural analysis and in engineering data select the material structural steel and convert it into POM material.
POM material.
Import the geometry and check in SpaceClaim for any irregularities.
Then open Ansys mechanical and assign the POM material.
Contacts - only 1 contacts created in the whole setup with frictional type with friction coefficient of 0.2, formulation set to Augmented Lagrange, Normal stiffness to factor and value for the factor set to 0.1, update stiffness for each iteration and interface treatment is set to Add offset, Ramped effects.
Mesh - Mesh the buckle clip model in such a way that the overall number of elements is less than 31,000. It is mandatory to bring it under 31K.
Analysis Settings - The simulation runs for 4 steps. So, the number of steps is set as 4, solver type and weak springs set as Program controlled, large deflection is set to on and stabilization set to constant method to energy and energy dissipation ratio to 0.1 and in Output control set all output to yes.
Case 1 - Moving the clip by keeping the buckle fixed.
Fixed Support - the buckle provides fixed support to constrain the movement.
Displacement - the clip is provided with a displacement in negative Z direction.
Case 2 - Moving the buckle by keeping the clip fixed.
Fixed Support - the clip provides fixed support to constrain the movement.
Displacement - the buckle is provided with a displacement in positive Z direction.
Run the simulation for both the case and results obtained.
Result - The analysis runs successfully and results obtained.
Case 1 - Moving the clip by keeping the buckle fixed.
Equivalent Stress Max - 2.7763 Mpa
Pressure Max - 6.047 Mpa
Total Deformation of Clip Max - 49.745 mm
Total Deformation Max - 49.745 mm
Total Deformation - Animation
Case 2 - Moving the buckle by keeping the clip fixed.
Equivalent Stress Max - 11.077 Mpa
Pressure Max - 6.1611 Mpa
Total Deformation of Clip Max - 2.4632 mm
Total Deformation Max - 49.7 mm
Total Deformation - Animation
Conclusion -
- In both cases, total deformation remains the same.
- Total deformation of the clip is higher in Case 1 because the clip is moving and the buckle is fixed.
- Equivalent stress and Contact pressure are higher in Case 2 when the buckle is moving and the clip is fixed.
