Sketch a G+1 residential plan according to Vaastu Shastra and Calculation of Loads as per IS code

AIM:

This project G+1 floor residential plan, according to Vaastu Shastra, and list down the names of the structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction.

Also, assume the sizes of the structural elements (Column, Beam, Slab) and accordingly calculate the individual corresponding loads from the members as per IS code.

Introduction:

  • To sketch a plan G+1 floor residential building according to Vaastu Shastra and Calculation of Loads as per IS code.
  • List down the names of the structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction, and accordingly calculate the individual corresponding loads from the members as per IS code.

Procedure:

1.VAASTU SHASTRA:

  • Vaastu shastra is the ancient Indian science of architecture and acts as a guideline to design the home to enhance positive energy.
  • Our nature is abundant with the powerhouses of energy sources like the sun, wind, moon, water, earth, and fire.
  • Effect of sunrays, the flow of wind, the pull of earth's magnetic field, and other such cosmic energies.
  • A good home needs to radiate the right kind of energy.
  • A person dwelling in a house comes under the influence of a specific energy field.
  • The architectural changes are not possible for a ready-to-move in-house.

2.Significance of eight directions:

  • Four cardinal directions North, South, East, and West.
  • Four intercardinal directions are North-East, North-West, South-East, and South-West.
  • Each direction signifies an aspect of life and is governed by various Gods.
  • North- Wealth
  • South- Dharma
  • West and East - Overall prosperity

3.Basic principles of Vaastu Shastra:

  • Shape- Rooms should preferably be square or rectangle
  • Room basics- The room should be airy, well-lit, bright, and clean
  • Home center- Centre of the house should be an empty space
  • Stairs and Furniture-Heavy furniture in S-W direction
  • Water- Avoid keeping plants and water features in the bedroom
  • Dining spacing- Should be near the kitchen and not near the main door
  • Mirror placement- Mirror facing the bed is strictly not allowed. Mirrors in the bedroom need to be placed in such a way that the bed cannot be seen
  • Kitchen- South-east is best. North-east to be avoided
  • Staircase- Southwest is best. Northeast to be avoided
  • Toilet- North-west is the best. North-east to be avoided
  • Master bedroom- Southwest is best
  • Guest room- North-west is best
  • Living room- Northwest is best
  • Overhead tank- West is best
  • Underground water tank- Northeast is best. South-west to be avoided

SKETCH OF GROUND FLOOR PLAN AND FIRST FLOOR PLAN:

  • We need to draft a plan for a G + 1 residential building based on Vaastu Shastra.
  • The Plan taken is as below

Dimensions of Ground Floor Plan: (All dimensions are in a ‘meter’)

  • Living Room- 4.80 x 5.50
  • Lobby- 6.30 x 2.00
  • Kitchen- 3.60 x 2.27
  • Dining- 3.60 x 3.00
  • Toilet (w/c)- 2.00 x 2.10
  • M. Bedroom- 4.20 x 3.60
  • Guest Bedroom- 4.20x3.60

Dimensions of First Floor Plan: (All dimensions are in a ‘meter’)

  • Family Living - 6.30x3.00
  • Study Room – 2.10x5.50
  • Balcony- 6.30x2.27
  • Lobby- 6.30x2.00
  • Bedroom – 4.20x3.60
  • Bedroom – 4.20x3.60
  • Toilet (w/c)- 2.00 x 2.10

Other Dimensions:

  • The thickness of the external/ internal wall=0.23m
  • Thickness of slab = 0.125m
  • Dimension of column =0.30m x 0.30m
  • Dimension of beam = 0.30m x 0.45 m
  • Height of wall of Ground floor = 3.00m
  • Height of wall of First floor = 3.00m

The names of the structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction are:

(apart from structural drawings important service drawings are also mentioned)

  • Centre line drawing
  • Footing and column layout with reinforcement details
  • Column schedule with reinforcement details
  • Plinth beam layout with reinforcement details
  • Each floor beam layout with reinforcement details
  • Lift pit and headroom with reinforcement details
  • Each floor plans
  • Foundation plan
  • Block plan
  • Roof slab layout
  • Column sections
  • Septic tank detail
  • Overhead water tank details
  • Furniture plan
  • Road drainage plan
  • Setting out a plan
  • Section drawings of buildings
  • Plumbing details
  • Electrification details

1. CALCULATION OF DEAD LOADS:

a) The dead load of the column:

  • Dimension of column=0.30m x0.30m

Height of column= (slab thickness x 2) + height of the wall for ground floor+ height of the wall for the first floor

= (0.125 x 2) +3+3

=6.25 m

The total volume of one column = 0.30 x0.30x6.25

=0.563 m3

Unit weight of RCC (as confirmed from IS 875:PART 1) =25kN/m3

The dead load of one column= 0.563 x 25

= 14.075kN

b) The Dead load of the beam:

  • Dimension of column=0.30m x0.45m

The total volume of beam per meter length=0.30x0.45x1

=0.135m3

Unit weight of RCC (as confirmed from IS 875:PART 1) =25kN/m3

A Dead load of beam per unit meter length = 25x 0.135

=3.375kN

c) Dead load of the slab:

  • The slab is always designed for a span of 1m2.

Hence assume the size of the slab as 1m x 1m

Thickness of slab= 0.125m

Unit weight of RCC (as confirmed from IS 875:PART 1) =25kN/m3

The total volume of slab per square meter span = 1.00m x 1.00m x 0.125m

= 0.125m3

A dead load of slab per sqm span area = 0.125 x25

= 3.125kN

d) A Dead load of walls:

  • The thickness of the external/ internal wall=0.23m

Unit weight of masonry (as confirmed from IS 875:PART 1) =20kN/m3

Height of ground floor wall=3.00m

A dead load of ground floor wall per unit meter length= volume of wall per meter length x unit weight of brick masonry

= 3x0.23x1x20

=13.80kN

Height of first floor wall=3.00m

A dead load of first-floor wall per unit meter length= volume of wall per meter length x unit weight of brick masonry

= 3x0.23x1x20

=13.80kN

Total weight of both ground floor and first floor walls per unit meter length= 13.80+13.80

=27.6kN

2. CALCULATION OF LIVE LOADS:

As per IS-875 part-2, for residential buildings, live loads are taken as

  • Living/Dining =2kN/m3
  • Kitchen =2kN/m3
  • Bedroom =2kN/m3
  • Toilet =2kN/m3
  • Study Room =2kN/m3
  • Terrace/balcony =3kN/m3
  • Staircase =3kN/m3

3. CALCULATION OF WIND LOAD:

  • If the height of the building is more than 10 meters then the building needs to be designed for wind load
  • But, in this case, the height of the residential building is 6.25 meters.
  • So, there is no need to find THE WIND LOAD.

References and IS codes used for the design:

  • IS 875:1987(part 1) for Dead load
  • IS 875:1987(part 2) for Live load
  • IS 875:1987(part 3) for Wind load
  • IS 456:2000 for reinforced concrete

RESULTS:

  • The plan of the G+1 Floor residential building is prepared with the consideration of the concept of Vaastu Shastra
  • The load calculations of structural elements Column, Beam, Slab calculated as loads are done as per IS code considerations.
