Sketch a G+1 residential plan according to Vaastu Shastra and Calculation of Loads as per IS code

Sketch a G+1 floor residential plan, according to Vaastu Shastra, and list down the names of the structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction.

Also, assume the sizes of the structural elements (Column, Beam, Slab, etc.,) and accordingly calculate the individual corresponding loads from the members as per IS code.

Aim : To sketch a G+1 floor residential plan, according to vaastu shastra and to calculate the loads on individual members.

Vaastu shastra

Vaastu shastra is the ancient indian science of architecture and acts as a guideline to design houses in the way that enhances positive energy. Our nature is abundant with power houses of energy sources like sun, wind, moon, water, earth and fire. Effect of sunrays, flow of winds, pull of earth's magnetic field and other such cosmic energies. A good home needs to radiate the right kind of energy. A person dwelling in a house comes under the influence of a specific energy which comes under the influence of a specific energy field. Architectural changes are not possible for a ready to move in house.

Auspicious directions as per vaastu shastra

Kitchen :

  • South-east is the best direction
  • north-east is to be avoided

Staircase :

  • South-west is best for stairs
  • North-east to be avoided

Toilet :

  • North-west is best
  • North-east to be avoided

Master bedroom :

  • South-west is the best

Guest room :

  • North-west is the best

Living room :

  • North-west is the best

Overhead tanks :

  • West is the best

Underground tanks :

  • North-east is the best
  • South-west to be avoided

Procedure

Dimensions of ground floor plan :

  • Drawing/Living room : 11.2m*9m
  • Master bedroom : 4.5m*4m
  • Car parking : 10m*4.5m
  • Lift : 2m*2m
  • Store room : 3.5m*2.8m
  • Staircase : 2.8m*2.5m
  • Kitchen : 5m*3.5m
  • Dinning : 4.5m*4.25m
  • Pooja room : 6m*4.5m

Dimensions of first floor plan :

  • Bedroom : 8m*4.5m, Terrace : 6m*2m, Bathroom : 6m*2.4m
  • Common terrace : 3.5m*1.5m
  • Home theater : 7m*6m
  • Bed room : 8m*5m
  • Lift : 2m*2m
  • staircase : 2.8m*2.5m

Other dimensions :

  • Thickness of internal/external wall : 250mm (0.25m)
  • Thickness of slab : 250mm (0.25m)
  • column dimensions : 300mm*300mm (0.3m*0.3m)
  • Beam dimensions : 450mm*300mm (0.45m*0.3m)
  • Height of ground floor wall : 4m
  • Height of first floor wall : 3.5m

Load calculations :

Data:

  • Unit weight of concrete = 25KN/m3
  • Unit weight of brick masonry = 20KN/m3

(a)Dead load calculations

1.Column

  • Column dimension = 0.3m*0.3m
  • Height of column = (slab thickness*2) + Height of wall for ground floor + Height of wall for first floor = (0.25*2)+4+3.5 = 8m
  • Total volume of one column = 0.3*0.3*8 = 0.72m3
  • Dead load of one column = Volume of column*Unit weight of concrete = 0.72m3*25KN/m3 = 18KN

2.Beam

  • Beam dimension = 0.45m*0.3m
  • Total volume of beam per meter = 0.45*0.3 = 0.135m2
  • Dead load of one beam = Volume of beam*Unit weight of concrete = 0.135m2 *25KN/m3 = = 3.375KN/m

3.Slab

  • Thickness of slab (volume of slab per sqm) = 0.25m
  • Total load of slab = Volume of slab*Unit weight of concrete = 0.25m*25KN/m3 = 6.25KN/m2

4.walls

  • Thickness of external/internal walls = 0.25m
  • Height of ground floor wall = 4m
  • Dead load of ground floor wall = Volume of wall*Unit weight of brick masonry = 4m*0.25m*20KN/m3 = 20KN/m
  • Height of first floor wall = 4m
  • Dead load of first floor wall = Volume of wall*Unit weight of brick masonry = 3.5m*0.25m*20KN/m3 = 17.5KN/m
  • Total weight of both floors = 20KN/m + 17.5KN/m = 37.5KN/m

(b)Live loads

As per IS-875 part-2, for residential building, Live load for

  • Living room = 2KN/m2
  • Kitchen 2KN/m2
  • Bed room = 2KN/m2
  • Wash room = 2KN/m2
  • Toilet = 2KN/m2
  • Home theater = 2KN/m2
  • Store room = 3KN/m2
  • Terrace = 3KN/m2
  • Stair case = 3KN/m2

(c)Wind load

Height of the building = 4m+0.25+3.5+0.25 = 8m, which is less than 10m and according to codal norms for buildings of height less than 10m is not considered.

Result

  • The paln of G+1 floor residential plan is made according to vaastu shastra
  • All the individual structural loads are calculated according to the code.
