Sketch a G+1 residential plan according to Vaastu Shastra and Calculation of Loads as per IS code
Challenge 10
Aim - Sketch a G+1 floor residential plan, according to Vaastu Shastra, and list down the names of the structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction.
Introduction –
- Vaastu shastra is the ancient Indian science of architecture and acts as a guideline to design your home in the way that enhances positive energy.
- Our nature is abundant with powerhouse of energy sources like the sun, wind, moon, water, earth, and fire.
- Effects of sunrays, flow of winds, pull of earth’s magnetic field and other such cosmic energies.
- A good home needs to radiate the right kind of energy.
- Architectural changes are not possible for a ready to move in house.
Requirements/ needs to be followed for a house
Significance of 8 directions
- Four cardinal direction North, South, East and West
- Four intercardinal direction North-East, North-West, South-East and South-West
- Each direction signifies an aspect of life and is governed by various gods.
- North – wealth
- South – Dharma
- West and East – overall prosperity
Basic principles of Vaastu Shastra
- Shape – Rooms should be preferably be square ore rectangle.
- Room basics – Room should be airy, well lit, bright and clean.
- Home centre – centre of the house should be an empty space.
- Stairs and Furniture – Heavy furniture should be kept in the south west direction.
- Water – Avoid keeping plants and water feature in the bedroom.
- Dining Table – dining space be near the kitchen and not near the main door.
- Mirror Placement – Mirror facing the bed is strictly not allowed. Mirror in the bedroom need to be placed in such a way that the bed cannot be seen.
Auspicious direction
- Kitchen – South East is the best, North-East to be avoided.
- Staircase – South-West is the best. North-East to be avoided.
- Toilet – North- West is the best, North-East to be avoided.
- Master Bedroom – South-West is the best
- Guest Room – North-West is the best
- Living Room – North-West is the best
- Over Head Tank – West is the best
- Under Ground Tank – North-East to be avoided. South-West to be avoid.

List of the structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction.
- Centre line drawing
- Footing and column layout with reinforcement details
- Column schedule with reinforcement details
- Plinth beam layout with reinforcement details
- First floor beam layout with reinforcement details
- First floor slab layout with reinforcement details
Also, assume the sizes of the structural elements (Column, Beam, Slab, etc.,) and accordingly calculate the individual corresponding loads from the members as per IS code.
Assuming,
size of all column -300 x 300
All beams are 300mm x 450mm
Slab thickness if 125mm
The height of the wall is 4.5m
Dead load calculation
- All columns are 300mm x 300mm
DL = 25 * 0.3 *0.3 * 4.5 = 10.125 kN
- All beams are 300mm x 450mm
DL = 25 * 0.3 *0.3 = 2.25 kN/m
- Slab thickness if 125mm
DL = 25 * 0.125 = 3.125 kN/m2
- The height of the wall is 4.5m
For external wall 230 mm thick, DL = 20 * 0.23 * 4.5 = 20.70 kN/m
For internal wall 115 mm thick, DL = 20 * 0.115 * 4.5 = 10.35 kN/m
Live Load Calculation
Bath (2 m x 3 m) – 2 kN/m2
Bedroom (3m x 3m – 2 kN/m2
Kitchen (3m x 4m) – 2 kN/m2
Store Room (3m x 1.5m) – 3 kN/m2
Dining / Living Room (4m x 4m) – 4 kN/m2
Terrace (6m x 3m) – 1.5 kN/m2
Assumed area of plan = 8.5m x 10m = 85 sqm
Height of structure – 5.5 m
Wind Load Calculation
Since the height of building is less than 10, so the impact of wind load, will be negligible.
