shock tube
This simulation is to study the interaction between two speices at a higher pressure gradient.A typical shock tube setup is used in this simulation, the species used here are nitrogen and oxygen. in reality there would be two seperate compartments to hold the two different species, at a higher pressure gradient the diaphragm seperating these copartments, would breakcausing the interaction. in the simulation this action is been repliocated by definig specific regions and events at definite time steps.
There will be pressure fluctuations and velocity fluctuations in the system as they create oblique shock waves at the thin layer of interaction, due to adverse pressure variation. these oblique shock waves tend to formed at the junction of the two species, tend to mirror itself and form a trail of shock waves.this patter of oblique shock waves is called as a 'diamond shock wave'.
to capture the species interaction precisely, adaptive mesh refinement is given based on the concentration of the nitrogen, in the control volume.since in the shock tube the species dont mix with one another, there will be fluctuation in the cell count in a particular region, as the concentration of nitrogen keepsshifting from region to region.
