Section Modulus calculation and optimization
For Hood Design
Section modules:
Section modulus is the ratio of bending to the farthest fiber from neutral axis, or it is the measure of the strength of the beam.
Ratio of Area Moment of Inertia to the Distance from the Neutral Axis to the Point where the Bending Normal Stress is determined.
Section modulus (S) = I/Y
I = Moment of inertia of structure.
Y = Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.
Case 1 :
For my hood design the moment of inertia values are,

Maximum moment of inertia =4.299e-007m4= 4.299× 105 mm4
Minimum moment of inertia =1.015e-004m4
The total distance of the hood Y =487.212mm
Distance between the neutral axis to the extreme end =(487.212mm/2)= 234.606
To find section modulus of HOOD section, we have to calculate
S=( 4.299× 105) /234.606=1764.73mm3
Case 2 : optimization
Now the intersection for the offset of 0.5mm of the outer panel shown below

Maximum moment of inertia =4.567e-007m4= 4.567× 105 mm4
Minimum moment of inertia =1.064e-004m4
The total distance of the hood Y =487.212mm
Distance between the neutral axis to the extreme end =(487.212mm/2)=243.606
To find section modulus of HOOD section, we have to calculate
S=( 4.567× 105) /243.606=1874.75mm3
conclusion
Increasing the gap in between the outer and the inner panel leads to increament in the section modulus,so resistant to bending will also be get increased due to this ,strength of the hood will increase.From the result we found out that increasing the cross-section area would give a better section modulus and helps in increasing the strength of the hood.
