Section Modulus calculation and optimization

OBJECTIVE
        To calculate the section modulus of the hood assembly and modify the sketch to improve the section modulus on the hood assembly using NX cad.

INTRODUCTION
        The Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of flexural members.
Mathematically section modulus is defined as the ratio of moment of inertia area to the distance of extreme fiber from the neutral axis.
S=l/y
Where,
S= Section modulus
l= moment of inertia area
y= Distance between neutral axis and extreme end of object

Calculation of Section modulus

For existing sektch

Minimum Moment of inertia=1.493852236 e+004[mm^4]
Neutral fiber y= 440mm
S=l/y =33.95 mm^3

For modified sketch
In this case the inner panel is 1mm offset from the hood outer panel.

Minimum Moment of inertia=1.539070242 e+004[mm^4]

Neutral fiber y= 440mm
S=l/y =34.97 mm^3

CONCLUSION
      Thus the Section modulus calculated values from Sketch 2 is having the highest strength than the sketch 1 hood design.
