Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS
- Ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in the extreme fibre
- It given us an idea about how much of bad the given syructure can take
- If the section modulus increases the moments of resistance increases and hence its load bearing capacity
- Section modulus depends only on the corrs section shape ofthe structure
- For symmetric section the value of section modulus is for both above and below of centroid of the fiber
ELASTIC SECTION MODULI
- The elastic section is defined as the ratio of the section and the distance from the neutral axis any give extreme fiber
- It can also be defined in trems of the first moment of area
- It is also often used to determine the extreme fiber elastic stresses as well as the yield moment of elastic section
