Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM: TO CAL CULCULATE THE SECTION MODULUS & MODIFY THE SECTION TO IMPROVE THE OVERALL SECTION MODULUS.
DESCRIPTION
The section modulus -the ratio of moment of inertia of section about the neutral axis to the distance of outer most layer from neutral axis.
the section modulus is a geometric property which determines how much load a structure can withstand without failure.
S=I/Y
Where
S= Section modulus
I= min area moment of inertia
Y= distance b/w neutral axis & extreme end of the object.
CALCULATION OF SECTION MODULUS BEFORE MODIFICATION
FOR COMPLETE SECTION
Y=838.79/2 = 419.39
2.5809*10^3=2580.9
S=I/Y
I=area moment of inertia.2.5809*10^3 mm^4
Y= distance b/w neutral axis & extreme end of the object.419.39
S=2580.9/419.39=6.15mm^3.
FOR MODIFIED SECTION
In this case i have added the embosses & increased the offset value of inner panel to 0.5mm to outer panel.
S=I/Y
IN THIS CASE MIN MOMENT OF INERTIA
I=area moment of inertia. 2.6504*10^3=2650.4mm^4
Y =distance b/w the neutral axis & extreme end of the object.=419.39
S=2650.4/419.39
S=6.319mm^3
CONCLUSION
Thus the strength of the hood assembly was sucessfully increased by modifying it. the safety of the vehicle also improved.
We can see that the value of S increased as the modification of the object & distance b/w the hood inner & outer panel is increased as S is directly proportional to moment of inertia. Thus the section is proved that ok. & optimized better section modulus value.
