Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Step 1: Calculate the Section Modulus of the Original Design

Assume the following values for the original section:

  • Moment of Inertia, III: 1000 cm4^44
  • Distance to the neutral axis, yyy: 20 cm

S :- S=yI=20cm1000cm4=50cm3 ; -----(1)

  • new Moment of Inertia, III: 3000 cm4^44 (increased due to shape and material distribution)
  • New distance to the neutral axis, yyy: 30 cm
  • S;- Snew=yI=30cm3000cm4=100cm3 ;------(2)

    • Original Section Modulus, SSS: 50 cm3^33 ;- (1)
    • New Section Modulus, SnewS_{new}Snew: 100 cm3^33; (2)

    Answers:

The new design features a Section Modulus of 100 cm3^33, which is an improvement over the original design's 50 cm3^33.
