Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus: Section Modulus of the cross-sectional shape is an important factor in the design of beams. It is a direct measurement of the strength of the beam. A Beam that has a larger section modulus than other section is stronger and capable of supporting/withstanding larger loads.

W.K.T Section Modulus S = I/Y

where,

S= section modulus

I= Moment of Inertia

Y= distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Object Material Stainless steel AISI 302 = 520 Mpa (cold rolled)

1. Section Modulus of Initial design

Imax =4859028.3 mm4

Imin = 15785.8 mm4

y= 441 mm

Smax= Imax /y = 11018 mm3

Smin = Imin /y =35.79 mm3

2. Section Modulus of after little optimization - offset outer panel for 2mm

Imax =5050127.6 mm4

Imin = 16775.5 mm4

y= 441 mm

Smax= Imax /y = 11451 mm3

Smin = Imin /y =38.03 mm3

Conclusion : By increasing the Gap between Inner panel and outer panel the optimized Design has given 4% increase in section modulus when compared to initial design.
