Section Modulus calculation and optimization
What is Section Modulus?
Section Modulus is Measuring Strength of Part.
Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members.
It is the direct measure of the strength of the Part.
S=I/Y
where,
S= Section Modulus
I= Moment of Inertia
Y= Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.
Section modulus is used to copmare the part to another car part. for better performance.
Steps to calculate Section modulus
Open the Hood Assembly>Hiding all the reinforcement and Hinged and Striker>Unhide the Hood inner pannel and Outer Pannel>Create Geometrical Set named as Section Modulus>Create a plane center of the hood>Sketch Positioning on the creted planes>Intersect 3D Element slecting complete Outer and Inner Pannel>Hide all the Part>Isolate the section modulus>deleting inner side and keep the out side for complete one loop>Fill by clicking sketch and Ok>Measure the y distance from vertical to extreme point>Using Measure innertia selecting 2D innertia and select fill>by selecting minimum value of Moment of inertia(this is the value where the body starts to break from its original shape)>By calculating
Y distance =439.886mm

Moment of Inertia I (before changes)
- Imin=2.632e+006mm^4
- Imax=9.742e+008mm^4

(After Changes)
- Imin=2.647e+006mm^4
- Imax=9.854e+008mm^4

formula for Moment Inertia
S=I/y
Before Changes
S=Imin/y= 2.632e^006/439.886 =2.41mm4
S=Imax/y= 9.742e^008/439.886=66.01mm4
After changes
S=Imin/y = 2.647e^006/439.886=2.42mm4
S=Imax/y= 9.854e^008/439.886=66.77mm4
Conclusion:-
Moment of Inertia increases with the increases of section Area and Length.
by changing the length and area of hood inner and outer panel will increases thus MOI increases.
