Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus Calculations

Objective: To find the section modulus of the hood and how to improve the section modulus value

S: Section Modulus Value

I: Moment of Inertia

Y: The distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

S = I/Y

1st Section

With no offset value

S=I/Y where I = 2.9849e+05mm^4 ; Y= 439.2mm

S = 680mm^3

2nd Section

With an offset value of 0.5mm of the intersection curve

S = I/Y where I = 4.664348064e+05mm^4; Y =439.2mm

S = I/Y = 4.664/439.2 = 1062.01mm^3

Results: As the offset value increases with increments of 0.5mm value the MOI (min) value increases. Thus, having a greater section modulus value than the previous section. Therefore, the objective successfully concludes.
