Section Modulus calculation and optimization
REPORT- SECTION MODULUS CALCULATIO ON HOOD
- AIM-To calculate the section modulus from the previous design HOOd, and find the strength , moment of inertia, and improve the hood for better load capacity. As the section modulus is directly proportional to the inertia, and inertia is directly proportional to the cross sectional area.
- SECTION MODULUS-
This section modulus is also called as 'Elastic section modulus', it is used for design purpose. Section modulus is defined as S=I/Y , where S= Section modulus, where I is the second moment of area (or area moment of inertia, not to be confused with moment of inertia) and y is the distance from the neutral axis to any given fibre. - Moment of Inertia-Here it is also called as area moment of inertia is a geometrical property of an area which reflects how its points are distributed with regard to an arbitrary axis. For section modulus we have to find the inertia for the cross section.
- DESIGN METHODOLOGY-
- CASE 1-
First I did the intersect horizontally both the outer and the inner panel. Then I projected the intersect curve(I used the 2d curve). Then I join the the outer most curve of outer panel with the lower most with the inner panel.
Then I measured the inertia with the section analysis command. Here we have to take the min moment of inertia for calculating the section modulus. And then I measured the total length of the cross section and from the neutral axis it should be the half of the full length.
CASE 1
Minimum moment of inertia = 2.785166482e+05[mm^4]
Total distance= 876.6459, so y=(total distance/2)= 438.32295 mm
FORMULA - S=I/Y;
I=2.785166482 e+05[mm^4];
Y=438.32295 mm;
Final, S=635.41425[mm^3]; - CASE 2-
In case 2 I have to check the most section modulus can be with the same hood. That's why I Have to Increase the cross section area. For increasing the cross sectional area I did some extra embosses like curves on the existing curvature. After increasing the cross sectional area I repeated the process for measuring the inertia, I use once more the section analysis command. And here I got better result from previous.
CASE2
I got minimum moment of inertia=2.827479633 e+05[mm^4]
RESULT- S=I/Y;
I=2.827479633 e+05[mm^4];
Y=438.32295 mm;
S=645.068[mm^3];
- CASE 1-
- CONCLUSION-
I got better 'SECTION MODULUS' for case 2 than the case 1. The difference between them is approximately of
10 mm^3.
