Section Modulus calculation and optimization

To Calculation of section modulus of Hood design

The section modulus is the ratio of the moment of inertia of any part or component related to the natural axis of the cross section to the distance from the natural axis to the outer most surface of that system. It is a geometric property for a given cross section used in the design of any flexural member.

The equation of the section of modulus is

S=I/Y

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.

Innitial section

Total span length of hood section = 875.77

Y=875.77/2

Y=437.86mm

min= 1.3399mm^4

S=I/Y

initial S= (1.3399*10^4)/437.86 = 29.9832mm^3

New section modulus with increased strength

inorder to increase the strength i add an ribs to increase the strength of the section.

min = 1.48905 mm4

optimize S= (1.48905*10^4)/437.86 = 31.132mm^3

RESULT

By adding a ribs at the center has increase the strenght of the section from 29.9832mm^3 to 31.132mm^3.
