Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULAS OF THE HOOD
OBJECTIVE - To find Section Modulas of Hood and optimisation to improve overall section modulas.
SECTION MODULAS -
Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. It is the direct measure of the strength of the shaft section or the beam section. Higher the section modulus of a structure, the more the resistive it becomes to bending.
It is the ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in the extreme fibre.
S = I / y
where, S = Section modulas
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.
CALCULATION -
The Section Inertia Analysis of the Hood is :
1. Before Optimization -

MOI (max) = 8.131416025e + 05(mm^4)
MOI (min) = 5.120882966e + 03 (mm^4)
y = 478.4814/2 = 239.2807 mm
S = I / y
= (5.120882966 * 10^3 +03) / 239.2807
= 21.40473 mm^3
2. After Optimization -

MOI (max) = 8.092168451e + 05 (mm^4)
MOI (min) = 5.525797320e + 03 (mm^4)
y = 239.2807 mm
S = I / y
= (5.525797320 * 10^3 + 03) / 239.2807
= 23.10590 mm^3
CONCLUSION -
1. The Section Modulas of case 2 is higher than case 1.
2. As we increase the section area, Moment of Inertia and Section modulas also increases which increase the strength and the load.
