Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION
Aim:
The section from your hood desing and calculate the section modulus using the formula. section modulus represented with the symbole of an a 'S' A section modulus is the vaue of the "Moment of interia of area" related to the neutral axix to supporting the fromula. And the defined to referenace axis to below the formula.
S=l/y
Introduction:
The step for calculating the section modulus for the given surface can be seen. In order to see how actually the change to neutral axis of the cross-section of a beam multiplied by the material is it modulus Z and the moment of interia expressed by the following equation distance of section modulus of using the formula.
METHOD
OJECTIVE:
SECTION MODULUS:
Where 'l' Moment of interia
'Y' is the distance from the refereance line NEUTRAL AXIS to one of the extreme end of an oject.
Moment of interia is nothing but offering ressitance aganist of the moment, bending or twisiting, i.e if we applied any external load offering to tend to defrom. The section modulus it may be defind as the ration of total moment of geometric
property of the section used for desing beams and flexed members. it does not represent anything physically.
Procedure:
S=SECTION MODULUS (MM^3)
l=MOMENT OF INTERIA OF THE SECTION ABOUT THE BENDING AXIS (MM^4)
Y=DISTANCE BETWEEN THE NEUTRAL AXIS AND EXTREME END OF THE OBJECT (MM)
AREA MOMENT OF INTERIA
MATERIAL DATA: STAINLESS STEEL AlSl 302-COLD ROLLED
WHERE YIELD STRENGTH OF STAINLESS OF STEEL IS 520MPA=520N/MM^2
That why formula represented as above.
By using the same principle I going to calculate the strength of an hood panel.
Here the moment of interia was calculated by using the NX-SOFTWARE obtained values are.
lMAX:-8.485481X10^5MM^4
lMAX:-3.18672X10^3MM^4
LENGTH OF 'Y' VALUE WAS 488.8252MM
Y/2=488.8252/2=244.412MM
1)SECTION MODULUS (S)
l/Y=8.48548X10^5MM^4/244.412MM
=3.471X10^3MM^3(MAXIMUM STRENGTH)
2)SECTION MODULUS (S)
l/Y=3.18672X10^3MM^4/244.412MM
=0.013X10^3MM^3(MINIMUM STRENGTH)
So the strength of an hood varies from 0.013x10^3mm^3 to 3.471x10^3mm^3
Now, one more trail is that here the inner panel curve offsetting outside by Immi.e increasing in cross sectional area, there result shown below.

I obtained the value of
lmax:-8.4462x10^5mm^4
lmax:-3.61202x10^3mm^4
Total length of 'Y' value was 488.8252mm
'Y' value:- Y/2=488.8252/2=244.412MM
1) SECTION MODULUS (S):-
l/Y=8.4462X10^5MM^4/244.412MM
=3.455X10^3MM^3(MINIMUM STRENGTH)
2) SECTION MODULUS (S):-
=0.014X10^3MM^3(MINIMUM STRENGTH)
So the strength of an hood varies from 0.014x10^3mm^3 to 3.455x10^3mm^3
So, here when comparing both hoods there is changes in both MAX and MIN strength Values, What i came to know that When i increased sectional area by 1mm the value of minimum strength was increased from 0.013x10^3mm^3to 0.014x10^3mm^3, hence with increased strength.
But, when we seen the value of maximum strength its sligtly decreases from 3.471x10^3mm^3 to 3.455x10^3mm^3,i think this due to desing of hood, here what we want to know that when increase in minimum strength or increase in both.
The strength of the material also depends upon the composition of material, thickness and cross sectional area of an object.
Conclusion:
It can be seen that there are two values of section modulus when the l value is changed. shape and the 2nd one is taken from the new l where more surface area is taken. The strength of the material is directly proportional to the moment of interia, hence incresae in sectional area there is have increase in overall mass of an object, henece have increase in s thickness and cross 8% percentage what we observed from the above discussion of mass object strength.
