Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Aim :
To generate the report on finding the section modulus for the hood design and improving it by based on the input and increasing the strength of the hood by using the CATIA V5
Section Modulus :
It is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape.
There are two types of section modulus,
- The elastic section modulus
- The plastic section modulus
Section Modulus can be calculated by using the Formula :
S = I / y
Where,
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of inertia
Y = Distance from the neutral axis to the most extreme end of the object
Distance from the neutral axis to the most extreme end of the object :
Y = 476.375 / 2
= 238.1875 mm
Case : 1
Do apply the finded values in the formula, to find Section Modulus (S) for case : 1
S = I / y
where,
I = 3.275 x 10-007m4
y = 238.1875 mm
S = 3.275 x 10-007m4 / 238.1875 mm
= 1374.96 mm3
Case : 2
Do apply the finded values in the formula, to find Section Modulus (S) for case : 2
S = I / y
where,
I = 3.498 x 10-007m4
y = 238.1875 mm
S = 3.498 x 10-007m4 / 238.1875 mm
= 1468.59 mm3
Result :
Case 1 : S = 1374.96 mm3
Case 2 : S = 1468.59 mm3
The difference between of case 1 and case 2 are the varying the distance between of hood inner panel and outer panel
The Distance varying from case 1 to the case 2 are 0.5 mm
So, the Moment of inertia has been Increased and the strenght of the hood also increased
Conculsion :
Thus the report have been generated on finding the section modulus for the hood design by using the CATIA V5
