Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section Modulus Calculation using NX CAD
- What is Section Modulus?
- Section Modulus is a geometrical property used to design beams and other load-bearing components.
- It may also be defined as the ratio of Moment resisted by section to the outermost fibre of the section.
- Section modulus defines the strength of the component i.e the higher the SM the higher the structural rigidity.
Section modulus can be calculated by using the formula -
S=I/y
S - Section Modulus
I - Moment of Inertia
y - Distance from the neutral fibre.
Procedure -
- MOI (Max) - 832523.2431 mm^4
- MOI(Min) - 3717.420993 mm^4
- y - 488.31/2 = 244.155 mm
- S - 15.22565990047306 mm^3
To improve the moment of inertia value and maximise the value of Section modulus we decrease the value of the embossed region by 1 mm
- MOI(max) - 834462.9102 mm^4
- MOI(min) - 3780.926404 mm^4
- y - 244.155 mm
- S - 15.48576274907333 mm^3
Conclusion -
From the above observation, we can see that the value of MOI increases by changing the depth of the embossed region and by increasing the area.
