Section Modulus calculation and optimization

AIM: To find the section modulus calculation and optimization of the hood

We are going to calculate the section modulus using the formula S = I/y

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Section Modulus Calculation:

  • We are going to calculate the section modulus of the hood using NX CAD
  • first we placed a datum plane at the required intersection and drew an intersection curve using the face and datum plane.

  • We used section interia analysis command to find the section inertia.

  • The result-

S=I/Y

=1.050899066e+07mm^4/440.7mm

=23.880mm^3

After increasing cross-section

S=1.150899066e+07mm^4/440.07mm

=26.157mm^3

Hence from the result we found that increasing the cross-section area would give better section modulus and helps in increasing the strength of the hood.
