Section Modulus calculation and optimization
OBJECTIVE
To calculate the swction modules of the car hood designed by finding the Moment of Inertia using the NX CAD and also to optimize the cross section for a rerquired result .
What is Section Modules ?
- Section Modules is a geometric property used in design of flexural memebers which considere the cross section of the member. It is highly dependant of the shapre of the cross section as well as thr area of the section.
There are two types of section modules -
1. Elastic Section
2. Plastic Section
S=I/Y
where ,
S= Section Modules
I= Moment of Inertia
Y = The distance between the neutral axis to the extreme end of the beam.
Moment of Inertia-
The tendency of rigid body to resist angular rotations is called moment of intertia .It is a quantity that depends on the shape of the body , mass distribiution and orientation of the rotational axis , and its doneted by - I.
CALCULATION -
- We have to design always minimum strenght for the factor of safety .
- S2>S2 Then strenght of perticular hood has been increase and improving strenght
Y = Minimum Distance of Section/2
= 877.11/2
= 438.55 mm
Case 1 - Before optimizing design

MOI(max) = 9.038306e + 07[mm4]
MOI(min) = 2.73877e + 05[mm4]
Now Section modules
S = MOI(min)/Y
= 2.73877e + 05[mm4]/438.55
S1= 624.56 mm3
Case 2 - After optimizing Design -

MOI(max) = 9.02164e + 07[mm4]
MOI(min) = 2.78214e + 05[mm4]
Now Section modules
S = MOI(min)/Y
= 2.78214e + 05[mm4]/438.55
S2= 634.422 mm3
