Section Modulus calculation and optimization
REPORT
AIM:
To calculate the section modulus of the designed hood for analyzing its strength and also optimizing the design to see the difference in the bending strength of the hood. For high resistance to bending, there need to design in such a way high value in MOI(min).
formula to be used.
S = I/y
Where,
S = Section Modulus unit mm3
I = Moment of Inertia unit- mm4
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object . unit mm
SECTION MODULUS
The section modulus is a measure of a beam's ability to resist bending stress. A beam with a higher section modulus will be able to withstand greater bending stress without failing. The section modulus is also used in the design of dtructural members such as beams and columns.
test 1

test 2

steps:
create a datum plane exactly at the centre of the hood. Datum plane using curve option and provide %arc length as 50%. click the intersection curve and select the tangent faces of inner and outer panel. after that create the sketch and project the intersection curve. to closet the gap select the studio plane option nd click the bypoles and click the two points.

for test 2

select the section inertia analysis and provide thicknes as 0.75mm. after the result are shown. take moi(mim) as value for calculation. and y is total length from end to end divided by 2. after this offset the lower part of the part to .5mm and follow same procedure. compare the resut
CALCULATION:
FOR TEST 1
S=I/y
I= 2.9143e+05mm4
y=439.785mm
S=662.664 mm3
test 2
I= 2.9586e+05 mm4
y=439.785mm
S=672.737 mm3
in test 2 the design part is safe compared to first one.
