Section Modulus calculation and optimization

AIM:To calculate the Section modulus of the hood model by using sectioning in it.

PROCEDURE:(i)Taking out the intersection of the inner panel and outer panel of the model shown below:

Section modulus is the direct measure of the strength of the steel. Bending a steel section that has a larger section modulus than another will be stronger and harder to bend. Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of flexural members.

The more section modulus, the more the member is resistant to bending of the beam. If two beams are made of the same material and comparing the “section modulus” of two beams, the beam with bigger section modulus will be tougher and more capable to withstand larger loads.

S=I(min.)/Y;2Y=880mm; I(min.)=2.432*10^-6m^4

S=2.432*10^6/440=5527.27mm^3

Now the intersection for the offset of 0.5mm of the outer panel shown below:

S=2.537*10^6/440=5765.9090mm^3

 Increasing the gap in between the outer and the inner panel leads to increament in the section modulus,so resistant to bending will also be get increased due to this ,strength of the hood will increase.

Now the change % will come as

S=(5765.9090-5527.27)/5527.27*100=4.317%(inc.) in the section modulus.
