Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus can be defined as the ratio of the area moment of inertia of the beam about the neutral axis to the extreme distance from the neutral axis. The larger the section modulus, the greater the strength of the beam and it will be capable of withstanding higher loads

S = I/y

 Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Section Modulus calculation

Baseline Design:

Area moment of inertia (MOI min) = 3.114641997 e+05 mm^4

Y distance = 876.4563/2 = 438.22815 mm

S = 7.107 mm^3

Optimized Design

The height of the initial design is increased by a value of 0.5 mm. It is made by offsetting the inner panel away from the outer panel.

Area moment of inertia (MOI min) = 3.158554550e+05 mm^4

S = 7.208 mm^3

It is seen that the 'S' got increased by 1.42%. Thus the new structure can withstand more bending stress compared to the initial design
