Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS

Section modulus is an essential engineering concept used in structural design, including hood design for vehicles. It represents a geometrical property of a cross-section of a structural member and is critical in analyzing its resistance to bending or flexural stresses. In the context of hood design using NX CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, the section modulus helps ensure that the hood is strong enough to withstand loads and stresses during its use.

Equation of Section Modulus

S= I/Y

S- Section Modulus

I- Moment of Inertia

Y- Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Section Modulus of my hood

Inertia measurement -

max (m1)= 8.9098 * 10^7 mm^4

min (m2)= 2.9240*10^5 mm^4

So I= 8.9098 * 10^7 mm^4

Distance between the ends= 875.8550 mm

therefore,Neutral axis to end Y = 875.8550/2

= 437.9275

Now section modulus S= I/Y

= 8.9098 * 10^7/437.9275

S = 203264.5339 mm^3
