Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus:

Section Modulus is a geometrical property of given cross section used in the design of beams or Flexual Members. It includes area for tension, shear and radius of gyration for compression and second moment of area and polar second moment of area for stifness.

It is Denoted by Z.

Formula

Z = I/ymax

Mathematically by bending stress equation,

M/I = Sigma. Max/ymax

M = Sigma.Max/Z

Where

M = Moment of Inertia

y = distance from NA to extreme layer (m)

The unit of section moduls is m^3,

Types of Section Modulus:

There are two types of section modulus. They are:

1. Elastic Section Modulus

2. Plastic Section Modulus

1. Elastic Section Modulus:

It is calculated when we are to use the material behaviour till the yield point. It has different section,

they are

1. Rectangular Section

2. Hollow Rectangular Section

2. Plastic Section Moduls:

It is used for materials where the elastic yield is acceptable and the plastic behaviour is considered

to be an acceptable range. It has different Section. They are:

1. Rectangular Section

2. Circular Section
