Use the Section from your Hood design and calculate the Section Modulus using the formula

Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Section modulus

Section modulus is a geometric property of a cross-sectional shape that describes its resistance to bending. It is an important parameter in structural engineering and design, as it helps determine the strength and stiffness of a structural member, such as a beam or column.

The section modulus (Z) is calculated based on the moment of inertia (I) of the cross-section and the distance from the neutral axis of the section to the outermost fiber (c). The formula for calculating the section modulus is:

Z = I / c

The moment of inertia represents the distribution of area around the neutral axis, indicating how the cross-sectional shape resists bending. The distance from the neutral axis to the outermost fiber represents the effectiveness of the material in resisting bending stresses.

Plastic section modulus

The plastic section modulus is a geometric property used in structural engineering to assess the plastic behavior of a cross-sectional shape when subjected to bending. It provides information about the capacity of a structure to sustain plastic deformation and absorb energy without experiencing failure.

When a material undergoes plastic deformation, it can withstand higher bending moments compared to its elastic behavior. The plastic section modulus quantifies the ability of a cross-section to resist bending beyond the elastic limit, where the material starts to yield and undergo plastic deformation.

The plastic section modulus (Zp) is calculated based on the plastic moment of inertia (Ip) and the distance from the neutral axis to the outermost fiber (c). It is determined using the formula:

Zp = Ip / c

The plastic moment of inertia reflects the distribution of the plastic material around the neutral axis. It accounts for the increase in the effective width of the cross-section due to plastic deformation.

The plastic section modulus helps engineers evaluate the plastic behavior and ultimate capacity of a structural member. It is particularly significant in assessing the strength and ductility of steel and other ductile materials.

By comparing the plastic section modulus of different cross-sectional shapes, engineers can determine the most efficient design that maximizes the load-carrying capacity and energy absorption while maintaining structural integrity.
