Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM -
To find the section modulus of the hood and optimisation to improve the overall section modulus.
SECTION MODULUS -
Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members, it is also referred to as the Polar Modulus or the Torsional Sectional Modulus.
S=I/Y
S = Section modulus
I= Moment of Inertia
Y= Distance from Neutral axis to the extreme end
First design study (Before optimization)-
The Intersection of the design was taken and then section Inertia Analysis was done-

Max MOI - 7.949683717e+05
Min MOI - 3.891453049e+03
As per the section modulus equation,
S = I/Y
I = Min MOI = 3.891453049e+03 mm^4
Y = Total distance /2 = 484.2 mm
therrfore,
S = 8.0368 mm^3
Second design study (After optimization)-
The hood inner panel’s curve is offset by 1 mm outwards and section inertia analysis is done same as case 1 for a closed curve.

Max MOI - 8.018333742e+05
Min MOI - 4.25927242e+03
As per the section modulus equation,
S = I/Y
I = Min MOI = 4.25927242e+03 mm^4
Y = Total distance /2 = 484.2 mm
therrfore,
S = 8.796 mm^3
Conclusion -
So, here the difference can be seen in the moment of inertia and the change in the section modulus can be seen by the change in the design(depth).
