Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section Modulus is a property used in structural engineering to measure a cross-section's ability to resist bending stress. It is defined as the ratio of the moment of inertia of a shape's cross-section about a neutral axis to the distance from the neutral axis to the most distant fiber. The formula for the section modulus is:
S = I / c
Where S is the section modulus, I is the moment of inertia of the cross-section about the neutral axis, and c is the distance from the neutral axis to the most distant fiber.
The section modulus is used in the design of beams, columns, and other structural elements, to ensure that they can withstand the bending forces to which they will be subjected. The higher the section modulus of a structural element, the better it is at resisting bending stresses.
