Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section modulus

Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and second moment of area and polar second moment of area for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape in question. Equations for the section moduli of common shapes are given below. There are two types of section moduli, the elastic section modulus and the plastic section modulus.

S = I/ymax

Mathematically By bending stress equation,

M/I = σmax/ymax

M = σmax × (I/ymax)

M = σmax × S

Where,

I = Moment of Inertia(mm⁴)

y = distance from NA to extreme layer(mm)

The unit of section modulus is mm³.

Use the Section from our Hood design and calculate the section modulus

from our hood

I= 7.870605001*10^4 mm4

y = 241 mm

so S = 326.58112 mm³

when offset 1mm in inner panal

I= 8.581114470* 10^4 mm4

y = 241 mm

S = 356.062841 mm³

Conclution

when change the innerpanal value the strength of the hood wiil be increase.
