Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Aim
To calculate section modulus of hood and optimize the design to have improved section modulus.
Section modulus:-
Section modulus is a direct measure of a strength of any cross sectional area of an object about an reference axis.
The formula of section modulus is given by,
S=I / Ymax
Where,
I = Moment of inertia (mm^4)
Y = Distance between neutral axes and outermost fiber (mm)
Steps to calculate section modulus:-
- Step 1:- Find location of centroid of given cross section.
- Step 2:- Find moment of inertia about neutral axis (INAINA)
- Step 3:- Find YmaxYmax from neutral axis.
- Step 4:- Find elastic section modulus using the formula provided above.
Moment of inertia is nothing but offering resistance against the moment, bending or twisting. So higher the moment of ineria higher will be its resistance to deform is higher.

The above pic is the calculation values of the 3rd case in which the moment of inertia was the highest therefore we will be considering the 3rd case for the further process.
Here in this calculating I have taken 3 cases for the section modulus, the calculation follows as below:-
- Case 1:-
Total Length(Y) :- 477.841mm/2 = 238.9205mm
Now the given formula for section modulus:- S=I/Y
I=1.542x10^5 mm^4
Y=238.9205mm
S= 1.542x10^5 /238.9205 = 645.4029 or (6.454x10^3 mm^3)
Case 2:- offset is 0.5mm
Total Length(Y) :-478.033/2 = 239.0165
Now the given formula for section modulus:- S=I/Y
I= 1.606x10^5 mm^4
Y=239.0165mm
S= 1.606x10^5/239.0165 = 671.92 or (6.719x10^3 mm^3)
Case 3:- offset is 0.65mm
Total Length(Y) :-477.891/2 = 238.9455
Now the given formula for section modulus:- S=I/Y
I= 1.626x10^5 mm^4
Y=238.9455mm
S= 1.626x10^5 /238.9455 = 680.4899 or(6.8048x10^3 mm^3)
since we have obtained the highest value from the 3rd case we will be considering the 3rd case for the further process.
NOTE :- KINDLY FIND THE CAT FILES IN THE ZIP FILES BELOW THE SECTION MODULUS DONE IS PRESENT IN THE FINAL HOOD DESIGN (PRODUCT FILE)
