Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Aim: Section modulous value should be better or higher

Section Modulus:

It is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members.

Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness.

Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape.

There are two types of section modulus,

  1. The elastic section modulus
  2. The plastic section modulus

Section Modulus can be calculated by using the Formula:

S=I/y

Where,

S-Section Modulus I- Moment of inertia

y- Distance from the neutral axis to the most extreme end of the object

Area moment of Inertia:

The area moment of inertia of a beams cross sectional area measures the beam ability to resist bending.

The larger the moment of inertia less will be the bend.

Where,

M = Bending moment

I = Area moment of Inertia

E = Youngs modulus

R = Radius of gyration

My hood Section Modulous Value

Moment of Inertia (MOI), Imax = 5.0892225113 x 10^6 [mm^4]

Moment of Inertia (MOI), Imin = 1.533550058 x 10^4 [mm^4]

Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object, y = 878.6825 mm / 2 = 439.34125 mm

Section Modulus, S = Moment of Inertia (MOI), I / Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the

object (y)

For Maximum (MOI),

S = (5.0892225113 x 10^6 mm^4) / (4439.34125 mm)

Smax = 11,583.757526 mm^3

For Minimum (MOI),

S = (1.533550058 x 10^4 mm^4) / (439.34125 mm)

Smin =34.9056697 mm^3

Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object, y =878.5534 mm / 2 = 439.2767 mm

Section Modulus, S = Moment of Inertia (MOI), I / Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the

object (y)

S = (5.386560810 x 10^6 mm^4) / (439.2767 mm)

Smax = 12,262.34127 mm^3

For Minimum (MOI),

S = (1.82670699 x 10^4 mm^4) / (439.2767 mm)

Smin = 41.58442708 mm^3
