Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Aim:

To calculate the section modulus using the section from Hood design

Given:

  • Hood Design
  • Formula for solving the problem

Formula:

S = I/Y

where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

Y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Procedure:

  1. Open the Section Inertial Analysis tab.
  2. Select the centroid from the outline of the hood.
  3. After getting the value of Imin and Imax, Find the value of Y.
  4. Find the value of Y using the formula Y = Total Length/2.

Calculation:

Given:

Imax = 9.952313287 x 10^5 [mm^4]

Imin = 819.84977082 [mm^4]

Total length = 486.1358 mm

Y = Total Length/2

= 486.1358/2

= 243.068 mm

Section modulus for maximum = 9.952313287 x 10^5/486.1358

= 2047.229043

Section modulus for minimum = 819.84977082/486.1358

= 1.686462447

Result:

The section modulus is in the range from 1.686462447mm to 2047.229043mm
