Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM:
To find the Section Modulus for the hood design and improving it by changing the input and increasing the strength of the hood, using CATIA V5.
Section Modulus:
It is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape.
There are two types of Section Modulus,
- The Elastic Section Modulus
- The Plastic section modulus
Section Modulus can be calculated by using the formula:
S = I/Y
Where,
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
Y = Distance from the neutral axis to most extreme point of object.
Distance from the neutral axis to the most extreme end of the object:

Y = 872.392 / 2
= 436.196 mm
Case: 1

Do apply the finded values in the formula, to find Section Modulus for case: 1
S = I/Y
Where,
I = 1.698e-006m^4 = 1.698e-006 x 10^12 mm^4
Y= 436.196 mm
S = 1.698x10^6 / 436.196
= 3892.74 mm^3.
Case:2

Here,
I = 1.798e-006m^4 = 1.798e-006 x 10^12 mm^4
Y = 436.196mm
S = 1.798x10^6 / 436.196
= 4122 mm^3
Result:
Case 1: S = 3892.74mm^3
Case 2: S = 4122mm^3
The difference b/w case 1 and case 2 is varying the distance b/w inner panel and outer panel of hood. And in case 2 i have increased the distance b/w inner panel and outer panel with 0.5mm
So, the moment of inertia has been increased and the strength of hood increases as well.
Conclusion:
Thus, by increased in distance value b/w inner and outer panel, strength of the hood also increased.
